Bhopal: Maulana Azad National Urdu University was established against all odds and it faced severe opposition in its earlier stages from within and outside the Urdu speaking people and government. Dr. Aziz Qureshi, former Minister Govt. of Madhya Pradesh who headed the Urdu University Committee constituted in 1992, disclosed this while delivering foundation day lecture at Maulana Azad National Urdu University, (MANUU), in Hyderabad. Prof. K.R. Iqbal Ahmed, I/c Vice-Chancellor, presided over the function.

According to a Press release issued by MANUU, Dr. Qureshi, who is also former Member of Parliament, claimed that without the effective and continuous support of the then Minister of Human Resource Development Arjun Singh, the dream of Urdu University would never have been realized.

Recalling his experiences as the chairman of the committee Dr. Qureshi said former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh late K. Vijay Bhaskar Reddy was very forthcoming towards the idea of establishing the Urdu University at Hyderabad. He too offered 500 acres of land for the University. Bangalore too was interested and Mr. Veerappa Moily also made similar offer.

According to Dr. Qureshi the very idea of establishing Urdu University was opposed at the highest level of the Government. Even some prominent Urdu scholars were of the opinion that Urdu as a medium of instruction was not useful in the present circumstances.  Despite all this opposition the  committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Aziz Qureshi completed its task and submitted the report. However to utter shock and surprise of the committee the concerned officials handed them over a note which said that Urdu is a dead language which cannot be linked with employment was willing hence the government shall not waste its money. Dr. Aziz Qureshi, prevailed over the concerned minister and officials in convincing the utmost necessity for establishing Urdu University.

Dr. Qureshi, who expressed his good wishes for the University, said Urdu and Urdu speaking people are still facing problems. The mandate of University wouldn’t be achieved until the Urdu students get jobs. The government is also neglecting the progress of Urdu language. He paid special tribute to the city of Hyderabad with reference to the promotion of Urdu language.

Prof. Iqbal Ahmed introduced the chief guest. Mr. Abid Abdul Wasay, PRO, welcomed the gathering. Prof. S.A. Wahab proposed vote of thanks. Mr. C.M. Eshwariah Registrar I/c, large number of teaching and non-teaching staff, students and prominent personalities were also present.

Earlier, a test balloon was released from the lawns of the campus by Prof. K.R. Iqbal Ahmed. This balloon will investigate the lower atmospheric winds & temperature, generation of gravity waves during annular solar eclipse of January 15. Test flight was conducted twice at 11:00 a.m. & 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The flight is part of the collaborative project between Anwar-ul-Uloom College and MANUU funded by ISRO.

According to Principal Investigator of the project Dr. Gopa Dutta and Co-Investigator Dr. H. Aleem Basha, special flights will be conducted between 13th Jan to 17th Jan 2010 to investigate the eclipse induced effects on lower atmosphere, the release said.
