Modi Speech in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi:
In an apparent bid to communalise the issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday compared a husband who uses instant triple talaq to divorce his wife with a Hindu marrying two women.

"Many MPs from the opposition expressed concern that if a boy of another community is jailed for giving triple talaq to his wife, what will his old parents do, how will they survive. But they never raised voice when a Hindu boy in similar circumstances is sent to jail for marrying two women," Modi said in his Rajya Sabha speech on Wednesday.

Modi also accused the Congress of lacking in the moral courage to introduce the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill - popularly known as the Triple Talaq bill, and castigated the leading opposition party for obstructing BJP's policies.

“Abolishing instant triple talaaq is one such remarkable issue”, Modi said.

"Even you could have brought in the kind of law you wanted on triple talaq. Your minister had raised voice against triple talaq 30 years ago. But, when you saw the political pressure building up from all sides, he was asked to leave”, Modi said while participating in the debate in the Rajya Sabha on the motion of thanks to the President's Address on Wednesday.

BJP president Amit Shah in his debut speech in the Rajya Sabha on Monday had also raised the triple talaq issue, accusing the Congress of stalling the proposed bill.

"For 70 years after the Independence Muslim women were at the loggerheads and suppressed wandering from one court to the other seeking justice.

“By bringing the triple talaq bill we wanted to end decades of injustice. But, the Congress stalled it. Congress repeated what it had done with the Shah Bano case", Amit Shah said in the Rajya Sabha.

Responding to Amit Shah's claim that Triple Talaq bill is aimed at protecting Muslim women, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad hit back saying the government is dividing husband and wife.

"You divided Shias and Sunnis, now you are dividing husband and wife. You put the husband in jail and tell the wife you have saved her", Ghulam Nabi Azad said in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

"We oppose instant triple talaq, but we do not support criminalising it,” Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

"You put the husband in jail and tell the wife you have saved her", he reiterated.

The Triple Talaq bill which has been passed in the Lok Sabha sent the husband using instant triple talaq in jail for three years. The opposition parties, including some of the BJP allies, demanded amendments in the proposed bill when it was introduced in the Rajya Sabha.

The Modi government however is not ready for the amendments and wants to pass the bill in its original disputed form.

Interestingly some of the women activists who were at the forefront fighting against the instant triple talaq are of the view that the bill if passed in its existing form will be a hell for the Muslim women.
