New Delhi: Days after India observed Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day a senior BJP MP and a former union minister called the entire freedom struggle of India a 'drama' and also said his blood boiled when he read history that made 'people like Gandhi' a Mahatma.
Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day is observed every year on January 30. Mahatma Gandhi, father of the nation and one of the front leaders of India's freedom struggle, was assassinated on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Godse - a Hinutva extremist who shared with a number of BJP leaders the same ideology of hate and violence.
Speaking at an event, the six-time Lok Sabha member from Uttara Kannada said the entire freedom movement was staged with the consent and support of the British.
“None of these so-called leaders were beaten by the police with batons even once. Their independence movement was one big drama. It was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an ‘adjustment’ freedom struggle,” he said.
Hegde ridiculed Gandhi’s hunger strikes and satyagraha, also terming them “drama”.
"These Congress people keep saying that we got independence because of the fast unto death or satyagraha. That is not true. The British did not leave India because of satyagraha,” he said.
"People supporting Congress keep saying that India got independence because of the fast unto death and satyagraha. This is not true. The British did not leave the country because of satyagraha. Britishers gave independence out of frustration. My blood boils when I read history. Such people become Mahatma in our country," Hegde said.
Hegde's demand has led to outrage with senior Congress leader Abhsihek Manu Singhvi asking Prime Minister Modi who led the Shaheed Diwas events only few day ago to respond to his party MP's outrageous statement.
Taking a swipe at the BJP over Hegde's remark Singhvi said that PM Narendra Modi's reaction to the controversy were awaited.
"Awaiting Narendra Modi who invokes Mahatma Gandhi at the drop of a hat especially when repackaging his ideas and to gain international credibility to comment on Mr Hegde who is a senior BJP Leader," he said in a tweet.
