Government to introduce law to streamline Wakf boards

Malegaon: In its 55th meeting on October 5, the Central Wakf Council discussed various issues including annual grant-in-aid by the center and the Establishment of University by the wakf boards working in various states in India. The meeting was chaired by Minister for Minority Affairs and ex-officio Chairman of the Central Wakf Council Salman Khurshid.

According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the issues that came for discussion in yesterday's meeting included annual grant-in-aid by the Central Government to the Central Wakf Council for its establishment and administrative expenditure, complete computerization of all the 29 State Wakf Boards, establishment of University by Wakf and Wakf Boards, financial sanction for the construction of office building of the Central Wakf Council in New Delhi and to bring the Wakf properties under the protection and maintenance of Archeological Survey of India

The Central Wakf Council till now has not been receiving any amount for its administrative expenditure and has been drawing its income for the 1% statutory contribution made by Wakfs all over the country or on the grant given by the State Governments. This grant would be subject to certain conditions like the Wakf Board should be constituted as per the provision of the Wakf Act, 1995, appointment of a full time chief executive officer of the board, survey of Wakf properties, timely audit of the annual accounts of the board, removal of encroachment and tracking of law suits and proper maintenance of Law Suit Register etc.

The idea of computerization is to imbibe e-management all over the country in the Wakf matters on the lines of e-governance. Central database would be in the office of the Central Wakf Council which would enable the Council to monitor and advise the State Wakf Boards timely and effectively. The work for this has already been assigned to the National Informatic Centre, says PIB in its release yesterday.

Bringing the wakf properties under Archeological Survey of India (ASI) would also help in determining the exact number of Wakf properties through a survey that would be jointly conducted by ASI and the State Wakf Boards, says the release.
