Strong earthquake rocks US-Mexico border area

Monday, April 05, 2010 07:57:06 AM, Agencies

Washington: An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale hit the Mexican peninsula of Baja California Sunday afternoon, the US Geological Survey said.

The depth of the strong quake was reported at at 10 km, Xinhua reported quoting the the USGS.

The epicentre of the earthquake is located in Baja California, the northernmost state of Mexico that boarders US state of California.

The tremor was felt in southern California and sent high-rises in major cities like Los Angeles and San Diego rocking back and forth.

Sunday's relatively shallow quake, centred in a lightly populated area in northeastern Baja California near the US border, was initially reported to be 6.9 in magnitude but the US Geological Survey later revised it to 7.2.

Media reports from San Diego, where the quake was also felt, said there were tremors lasting between 30 seconds and a minute in the US city.

Some buildings were reported damaged in Mexicali and there were some minor injuries, officials said, but telephone communications were cut off with the border city about 50km to the northwest of the epicentre near Guadalupe Victoria, so a fuller assessment could not yet be made.

Some people were reported trapped in elevators, retaining walls had collapsed in some places and electricity was out in several parts of Baja California, Alfredo Escobedo, the state director of emergency services, said.

The area had been hit by magnitude-3.0 quakes all week and multiple aftershocks were reported immediately after Sunday's major quake, including a 5.1 temblor centred near the border in Imperial, California.
