Mumbai: Monsoon rains have claimed 46 lives so far in Maharashtra where nine people were killed today in separate incidents.
Announcing a compensation of Rs one lakh each to the next of kin of the 46 people, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said nine people were killed today in two separate incidents.
In the first incident a beam of underconstruction building had fallen on a bypasser, resulting in his death on the spot. In second incident a boundary wall of Dosti Group at Vartak Nagar in Thane city collapsed on a hut, resulting in the death of eight people including six women with five others sustaining injuries.
Bhujbal said due to torrential downpour a landslide had occurred between Roha and Pune, which affected the road traffic on that route. But, the debris has been cleared and the vehicular traffic was brought to normalcy.
Addressing a packed press conference here after holding high level meeting of several agencies including BMC and MMRDA, Bhujbal said from June one till date 46 people have lost their lives, while 65 animals have perished and 600 houses damaged in rain-related incidents across the state.
He said the government has decided to pay compensation of Rs one lakh to next to kin of the deceased. He also said those who have received serious injuries will get Rs 50,000, while those sustaining minor injuries would be given Rs 5000.
