Karnataka poll

Bangalore: Billionaire and multi-millionaire politicians from BJP, the
Congress and JD-S are in the field for the May 5 Karnataka
assembly poll, show the asset affidavits filed by them.
T.N. Javarayi Gowda of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), contesting
from Yeshwantpur in north Bangalore, has declared assets of
Rs.150.58 crore (over Rs.1.5 billion). He is closely followed by
his party's state president and former chief minister H.D.
Kumaraswamy and his wife Anita who together have assets of Rs.123
crore.
Kumaraswamy is contesting from Ramanagaram, about 40 km from here,
and his wife from neighbouring Channapatna seat.
Tourism Minister and mining baron Anand Singh of Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP), contesting from Vijayanagar in iron-ore rich Bellary
district in north Karnataka, has assets of Rs.104.5 crore which
include a fleet of Bentleys, Mercedes Benzes and Tatra trucks.
From the Congress, its treasurer Shamanur Shivashankarappa has
declared assets of Rs.67.89 crore.
The 82-year-old Congress veteran runs a number of educational
institutions in Davangere in central Karnataka and is contesting
from Davangere South.
State Congress president G. Parameshwara, seeking re-election from
Koratagere in Tumkur district in south Karnataka, has assets of
Rs.3.87 crore.
Former BJP chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who now heads
Karnataka Janata Party, has shown assets of Rs.5.96 crore. He is
fighting from his old constituency Shikaripura in Shimoga district
in central Karnataka.
Nominations to elect 224 members of the 225-member assembly close
Wednesday. One member is nominated.
Vote count is on May 8.
