Allahabad: Violent mob on Monday pelted stones, torched a bus and laid siege to the house of district magistrate in protests over the killing of a 26-year-old law student at a restaurant.

The Dalit law student of Allahabad University, who is identified as Dilip Saroj, was beaten by a group of men on Friday in a fight that started when one of the attackers, Vijay Shankar Singh, accidentally brushed against him while entering a restaurant.

Violent protest erupted in Allahabad after Saroj succumbed to his injuries yesterday in a local hospital.

Police in riot gear had to be called in to control the situation as a large group of students chanted anti-government slogans and protested outside the offices of top police officers. Demanding immediate arrest of the culprits, the students also sought compensation for the family of the youth beaten to death.

A ruckus also witnessed in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council over the killing of the Dalit youth.

Leader of Opposition and SP member Ahmed Hasan raised the incident as soon as the Question Hour started. He alleged that though such incidents with Dalits were taking place across the country, the government had remained silent.

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav also slammed the ruling BJP government on law and order in the state and said that the murder showed that the state was in the "grip of criminal elements".

"No law and order is prevailing in the state. Murder of a Dalit student in Allahabad shows that the state is in the grip of criminal elements and the police is only killing innocents in encounters," Yadav said. Demanding a Rs 50 lakh compensation for the family of the law student, he claimed law and order had collapsed under the present regime.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati said on Monday that the student’s death was the result of narrow and casteist politics.

“The barbaric murder of a Dalit student in Allahabad is not an isolated case as such incidents are occurring on a regular basis,” she was quoted as saying by PTI.

“And no one else but the BJP’s narrow, casteist politics of hatred is responsible for it", she said.
