Salman Nadvi breaks down

Lucknow:
Salman Hussaini Nadvi, who quit from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) after a row over his meeting with Art of Living (AOL) founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, on Monday broke down while sharing details of his “Ayodhya Peace Proposal” with the students of Nadwatul Ulema.

Salman Nadvi was in Hyderabad to attend the Muslim panel’s 3-day meeting. He however announced his decision to “disassociate” himself from the board, of which he was a founder member, on Friday evening.
His decision followed the hackling and humiliation he was subjected to in the board’s meeting held at Owaisi Hospital Auditorium in Hyderabad.

The Muslim panel’s members were angry over Salman Nadvi’s meeting with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. They also accused Nadvi of diluting the board’s stand regarding the Muslim claim over Babri Masjid land and demanded his removal from the board.

Talking to the media later on Salman Nadvi said he was not allowed to put forth his views during the meeting. He also said that the board has been hijacked by few members who are behaving like a dictator.

Claiming that the Muslim personal law board had lost its credibility and hence should be dissolved, he announced his decision to quit the board he was associated with since 1972.

In a statement released on Sunday, the last day of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s Hyderabad meeting, the Muslim panel accepted Salman Nadvi’s “resignation”.

In Lucknow from Hyderabad on Monday, Salman Nadvi was back to his class at Nadvatul Ulema. In a packed classroom, Nadvi shared with the students the details of his “Ayodhya Peace Proposal” on which he is working with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Salman Nadvi said he is trying to buy peace in exchange of the disputed land so that innocent lives are saved and Hindus and Muslims live in peace.

“I proposed three points in front of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. First, those responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid must be punished. Second, Muslim community should be given 140 bigha of land in exchange of the 70 bigha disputed land. On this land, Muslims will build a mosque and also establish an Islamic university.  And third, Hindus will never claim in future their right on any mosque, madrasa or dargah in any part of the country hereafter”, he said while addressing the students.

“I have clearly said to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that if he is seeking an out of the court solution of the Ayodhya dispute then it is possible only on these terms”, he said.

“There are examples in the history when mosques were shifted to other places. This was exactly what Syed Ali Miya Nadvi had proposed many times in the past. But, the members of the board never listened to him. They are now doing the same with me”, he said, breaking down in tears even as the shocked students helplessly watched.

“I am working for peace. I want to save innocent lives. Life of innocents is utmost important in Islam. I want to stop bloodshed”, he added.

“I have taken this stand after realizing that more than 25 years of struggle in the name of demolition of Babri Masjid has resulted only in more hate, more bloodshed and more alienation of the community”, he said.

Meanwhile, Salman Nadvi’s departure from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has stirred a debate in the Urdu press and social media, with many criticizing the manner in which one of the senior most and founder members was treated.

Angry reactions are also circulating in the social media against AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. Both the politicians are accused of using derogatory language while denouncing Salman Nadvi’s Aydhya Peace Proposal”.

The most distinguished voice among those raising their voice in favour of Salman Nadvi is of Jamiate Ulema President Arshaf Madani.

Arshad Madani was one of the four members of the disciplinary committee constituted to decide the fate of Salman Nadvi and the committee, instead of reconciliation, closed all doors of rapprochement and paved the way for the latter’s exit.

However, in a statement published in an Urdu daily on Monday, Arshad Madani expressed his displeasure over the entire episode.
