Mumbai: Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil today asserted in the State legislative Assembly that no meeting took place between political leaders and police officers before appointment of Mumbai Commissioner of Police at the Centaur Hotel as alleged by Hasan Ali, an accused in the multi-crore tax evasion scam.
Patil said the state CID has started probing of the VCD, presented in the House by BJP's Devendra Phadanvees, which alleged that former Mumbai CP Hasan Gafoor, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and he himself were present along with Ali.
The VCD showed Ali being interrogated by a senior police officer. Patil said he has received an interim report of the CID.
He put the blame of making the VCD illegally with a pen camera by DCP Ashok Deshbhratar, who had interrogated Ali.
He said the CID will make a detailed inquiry as to why Deshbhratar asked such questions to frame Patil, Deshmukh along with other senior politicians.
''Though Centaur Hotel, where the meeting took place, was closed at the time, its poolside as well as lounge were available to arrange functions such as Yousuf Lakdawala's family marriage. Also on that date, March 15, 2008, I was not in Mumbai and neither was Ahmed Patel. My hands are clean. Neither I, nor Patel have anything to do with it,'' Patil said.
''Some politicians as well as police officers were present at the Lakdawala function but before that the Mumbai CP appointment was effected, therefore, any meeting was of no use.
''However, the CID has been asked to go deep into the matter and a report will be soon submitted,'' he added.
