Chennai: Muslim women activists trooped the Commissioner of Police's office on October 6 yesterday to protest against the ‘purdah’ cover given to television artiste Bhuvaneswari while she was being brought to the police station.

Tamil actress Bhuvaneswari and two young girls were arrested by the Chennai police for their involvement in prostitution. According to sources, she has been allegedly running this racket from her apartment at Adayar in Chennai. Sources also said that she was reported to the police by her neighbours after they suspected her of indulging in prostitution.

In a petition to the Police Commissioner, T Rajendran, the women activists belonging to the Indian Tauheed Jamaat said the ‘purdah’ was considered as a sacred and dignified garment by the Muslims worldwide.

Bhuvaneswari accused in a prostitution case, appeared in this traditional dress while being taken to the police station and this had hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community in the State.

It had become customary for those involved in the flesh racket and other crimes to hide behind the ‘purdah,’the Jamaat claimed,  and appealed to the police not to allow the practice in future.

Jamaat activist Masuda Alima told the media that the police must openly bring in the criminals so that the world could see them.

Masuda warned that the Jamaat would launch a massive agitation if the ‘purdah’ was misused by the criminals.

Bhuvaneswari is a popular Tamil actress, who has acted in a number of films including Shankar's Boys and serials including Bharathiraja's Therkathi Ponnu, making her mark with her bold, glamourous roles. She was earlier arrested by Chennai police in the year 2002 but was released later. Bhuvaneswari alleged that she was arrested while she was with her friends and that she did not run any brothels.
