British aid for SSA not misused, says HRD Ministry

Friday, June 18, 2010 07:44:53 AM, Agencies

New Delhi: A day after the British government said it would launch an inquiry into the alleged misuse of British aid for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the HRD Ministry expressed its “dismay” and “shock” at the “unsubstantiated allegations”.

The HRD Ministry stated that SSA follows a rigorous and robust monitoring system and that the Department for International Development (DFID), UK’s funding agency, was only a minor contributor to the flagship programme of elementary education.

“The Government of India has invested Rs 91,431 crore in the project till date while since inception DFID has reimbursed Rs 2500 crore, which represents 2.7% of the total investment under SSA”, says the HRD statement.
