Bhopal: Malaysian
athletes failed to make a mark on the second day in the ongoing
four-day 49th Indian National Open Athletics Championship
here on Wednesday.
The four-some Malaysian athletes took
part in their lone event of 20-km walk under the Asian Athletics
Exchange Program. None of them could finish among the medal winners
and the only best of their lot was
B.Thirukumaran, who finished 14th with a timing of 1::38:57.00. His
teammate Mohammad Sharrulhaiz Abdul Rahman finished 24th in
1::55:32.00.
Abdul
Rahman, who was not feeling well, talking to this correspondent said
his best timing in the 20-Km walk is 1::29:11.00 seconds which he
achieved in Germany 2004 in World Cup. He claimed to be 20-Km walk
Commonwealth Games champion in 2003 in Vienna and hoped to qualify
for the next year Commonwealth Games in Delhi. In 2003 in the
Afro-Asian Games held in Hyderabad he finished 4th in
10,000 metres run, he revealed.
The Army man Babu Bhai of India, the
national and meet record holder, came out first in the grueling
20-km walk race. He out-walked in a pack of 25 athletes clocking
1::27:43.00 second. This timing of his was, however, poor by more
than two minutes of his National Record of !::23:06.00 second
created in Berlin and his Meet Record of 1::23:40.00 second.

Babu Bhai talking to newspersons after
the race said his aim is to give India a gold medal at the
Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year for which he is practicing
hard. In today’s race his target was to achieve a timing of
1::27:00.00 but due to uneven surface he failed in his bid.
It may be mentioned the 20-km walk
event was held on a road with a slight slope at one end which
affected the performance of many athletes. Many, including Malaysian
athletes, complained about the uneven sloppy surface on which the
National event was held.
K. Somendra
Singh did proud to hosts Madhya Pradesh by claiming silver medal as
he clocked 1::30:03.00 while Chandigarh’s Baljinder Singh secured
third place by covering the distance in 1::30:18.00.
In fact Harminder Singh of Athletic
Federation of India . came second with a timing of 1:29:47.00 but
was disqualified as he had earned two warnings while completing the
race.
Indian
Railways, which has fielded a strong contingent in this meet,
continued to rule the roost with eight gold, nine silver and four
bronze medals to be on the top of the medal tally at the end of
second day. While Services, with three gold & two bronze medals, and
Kerala with two gold and two bronze medals, were placed send and
third respectively in the tally.
Meanwhile,
B.G. Nagraj of Railways emerged the fastest runner when he won the
100 metres gold medal of this meet. Nagraj touched the tape in
10.55 seconds to pocket the gold medal, ahead of Ritesh Anand, who
clocked 10.57 sec and S.Sathya, who finished with 10.59 sec. This is
the season best performance of Nagraj after recovering from injury,
he was injured after Ist Indian Grand Prix which was held on May 3
at Cochin.
"I had to
win the Gold to prove myself because I was injured and it turned
into the season best" said Nagraj after winning the race.
In the
women’s 100 metres Hurdle race National record and Meet record
holder Anuradha Biswal of Orissa was relegated to second spot by G.
Gayathri of Tamil Nadu who clocked 13.98 seconds. Anuradha
could finish the race in 14.15 seconds only for the silver medal
while her National record and Meet record timing stands at 13.38
seconds created in September 2002.
In men’s high jump Meet record holder
Bendict Starley with a record of 2.19 metres finished poor sixth
here with a jump of a height 2.08 metres only.
