New Delhi: Congress president
Sonia Gandhi today gave a clarion call to all party leaders to gird
up for the Maharashtra
Assembly elections scheduled for October this year.
In a high-level
meeting, Ms Gandhi took stock
of the situation and the party's preparations for the polls in the
state and also discussed about electoral understanding with the
Nationalist Congress Party and Republican Party of India.

K Antony, State Chief Minister A K Chavan, other party leaders
Sushil Kumar Shinde, Shivraj Patil, Ahmad Patel, Digvijay Singh, K
Rahman Khan, Mohan Prakash, Madhusudan Mistry, Kripashankar Singh
and Pradesh Congress president Manik Rao Thackeray were among the
dignitaries, who attended the one-and-half-hour meet at Ms Gandhi's
residence.
During the meeting, Chavan and Thackeray informed
about the government's and party's preparations for the elections in
the state.
After the party's golden victory in the last Lok Sabha
elections, some party leaders expressed their will to fight the
Assembly elections alone. The party also demanded that in a
situation of electoral understanding with NCP, more seats should be
allotted in favour of the Congress. However, the party has taken no
decision in this regard till now.
For the election
related work in the state, Ms Gandhi had constituted a committee of
five members under the leadership of Antony, which went in all parts
of the state and gathered information about the party's condition
and view of of party members on the same.
In addition,
groups of either two state ministers or three office-bearers were
ordered to go in various districts in the state and submit their
reports. According to sources, in today's meeting all those reports
were reviewed on the basis of which political situation in the state
was discussed.
