Mumbai: Sitting legislator from Bhiwandi (West) Rashid Tahir Momin resigned from the Samajwadi Party (SP) to join the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and also filed his nomination papers from Bhiwandi (West) as the NCP candidate on Saturday.
Saturday was the last day for filing the nomination papers for the Maharashtra assembly elections to be held on October 15, 2014.
Rashid Tahir Momin was a Congress MLA and had joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) in 2009 after party did not give him party ticket. He won the 2009 election from Bhiwandi (West) along with Maharashtra SP Chief Abu Asim Azmi.
While announcing his retirement from the Samajwadi Party (SP), Rashid Tahir said the SP is party of 'dictators' and he was feeling suffocated.
He is the second Muslim MLA who has joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Earlier, Mufti Mohd Ismael, a Jan Swaraj Shakti Party leader and sitting MLA from Malegaon (Central) assembly seat had on September 19 resigned and joined the NCP.
Mufti has also filed his nomination papers as the NCP candidate.
