Shillong: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate for Meghalaya Assembly elections Jonathone Sangma was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Samanda, East Garo Hills, on Sunday, according to local media reports.
Sangma was contesting the polls from Williamnagar seat.
The incident took place when the NCP leader was returning home in Williamnagar, after attending campaigns in Sobokgre and Nabokgre, APN News said.
"Jonathone N Sangma, #NCP candidate of #Williamnagar assembly seat in #Meghalaya, shot dead by unknown person about 7:50 pm polling in state on February 27. APN news had reported about threat perception", it said in a message on Twitter.

Sangma, who had recently joined the NCP, was close to winning the Williamnagar seat in the 2013 Assembly Elections.
He had reportedly expressed his desire to join the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and contest the upcoming February 27 election on its ticket.
